Found at the recent estate, I was compelled to haul it off with some other heavy but essentially worthless objects.

AN/APG-5 is a "Radar set, Gun laying, Automatic range finder, 2.5 GHz, Pulse, range 150-3000 yards, used on B-17 and B-24."

Ok I got the CP-8 range unit, now what. Sort of like having a doorknob and needing a house to go with it.

Anyone have data? It seems to be a forgotten item, may go for parts if no schematic can be found for tinkering purposes.

I was surprised to see it listed as being used on B-17 and B-24's.  Didn't know they had any electronic aids.  I found a listing that it was also used in F-86 fighters, Sabrejet.   My dad flew the navy version, FJ-3 Fury, and he had discussed how they had a range only radar aid for the optical gunsight.  It was mounted in the upper lip of the air intake, behind a  black rubber window.

AAF article with photos showing radar antenna fitted to B-25 gun, with discussion of combat testing against Japanese barge and boat traffic as a means for standoff to reduce casualties.

Four year old thread.  Chap named Raimey says he has manuals and systems including an APG-5.

I haven't found any tech manuals on line.  Some of the air force museums may be a good source as well.

Looked at the links posted by qaa.

From what I see,  all you really need is one of those rotatable machine guns.  If you set the gun up on your roof, you'll be all set for any incoming UFOs.  Or, OTOH if Noah happens by with his Ark.
