Wow!  Can you believe it?

This coming Tuesday, the 21st of June 2011, The Gray Hair Net will have their 3000th meeting.

For those who are not familiar with the Gray Hair Net, the net meets every Tuesday at 8:30 EDT; 8:00 EST on 1945kHz.  This is an AM-Only Net, and has been in continuous operation since 1953.  Most members are from New England, New York, PA and the South-Eastern portion Canada, however the net is open to anyone as long as we can hear you!

When an amateur officially becomes a member of the net (there is a simple procedure for this), a lifetime number is assigned.  My number is #49, and I joined sometime during the early 1970s.  There are currently 329 members.  Generally, around 20 to 30 people (on a good night) will check in to the net on any given Tuesday evening.  Participation is higher during the winter months when 160 meter propagation is generally good, and the static level is low.

Active members (members who check in somewhat regularly) receive birthday (for both you and your spouse), anniversary and get well cards.

So, if you are an active or inactive net member, or have been listening to the net for years, of just love AM nets on 160 meters, Join us this Tuesday, June 21st at 8:30.

Guests are always welcome at the Gray Hair Net, as long as you're on AM.

See you TUESDAY at 8:30 PM (Eastern time)

I forgot what my number is. I have it written on a wall at the camp (I have been doing a WALL long before Facebook) Wish I could make it Cry Cry Cry

How long will it be before the 4000 net meeting?

Hi Terry,

You are number 256, not that you need your number to check in.  Nothing on 160, eh?  Maybe you can muster something up :-)

Number 5000 - that's in almost 40 years - well, maybe Undecided   I remember thinking about whether there would be a net number 2000 - when it kicked over to 1000, and if I'd still be here, etc... 3000 - wow, never even thought about that!  If ham radio is still here in 20 years, there may be a net number 4000.  Some of us here should still be around for that...

Steve,
I will try to check in.  I am member 115, which I got some years ago.  I remember a lot of the OT'ers that use to be on the net which are unfortunately now SK.  One in particular was Seymor, W2JBI.

Just start running the net every night and you can get to 5000 easily.

Number 25,000 in fifteen days !!!

How?   Run it 24/7 with a new net call-up every minute.

Or run a separate net where members can check in 'for the numbers' and another where they can check in 'with their number', but only in numerical order. All directed roundtable QSOs should follow this format.

Add a new rule banning any member from checking in until the person holding the preceding number checks in, and restart the net each time someone doesn't show up. After all, if you're going to assign numbers, they should have some significance. Right? Make 'em count(pun optional)!

Well, despite the heavy static, net number 3000 of the Gray Hair Net was a GREAT success!

We had 34 check-ins, and the net went from 8:30 to after 11:00, which is the longest I've seen the net go in decades.

A few guys checked in who have not checked in for a LONG time.  It was a nice net!  Thanks to everyone who checked in and made the night a success.

Regards,

Steve

I turned the rig on and got everything tuned up Steve, but the static down here i SE-PA was way to loud.  30 DB over 9 and copy was poor.

On Monday night the static was pretty low.  I got on the AWA Top Band net that Joe, N3IBX host and we had good conditions.  Oh well, 160 in the summer!
