Many served in our family. We lost two. My fathers brother Wilson Murphy 30 days after the island  was taken on Saipan - Silver star. My best cousin Eddie Dale Burkett in Vietnam - no explanation other than "accidental death" at 18 in 1967.

Its great that people want to recognize all those who have served and those presently serving. However, people need to remember what this day is all about. It originally started out as "Decoration Day" where women would decorate the grave sites of fallen soldiers during The Civil War. So while some of you are eating your hot dogs and hamburgers, or finished watching your local parade, take a moment and say a prayer to those brave men and women who gave with their lives so that we can enjoy ours!

All the guys in my parent's familys went into WW2. My uncle was at Iwo and my Dad in the Navy and was all over the Pacific.
My Mother lost a cousin boarding a jap ship that was booby trapped.
They named a ship after him USS Alex Diachenko APD 123.
I lost a good friend in Nam two weeks after he arrived.

Thanks to all veterans, here and gone, for their service to our country and for the sacrifices made.

Frances the jeep was honored once again to participate in two local Memorial Day ceremonies this year.

Sunday at Dinkey Memorial Church Cemetery, Carbon County, PA.

Monday at the Slatington, Lehigh County, PA, Memorial Day parade and ceremonies. This was interesting. I was asked if a lady dressed as a WWII Bataan nurse could ride in the jeep. I had an ammo box in the back so my wife sat on it and the lady in uniform sat in front. When she introduced herself I made the comment that I had gone to grade school and high school with a fellow with the same last name as hers, and I mentioned the name. She said that was her husbands name and it turned out to be the same person. How's that for a small world? I hadn't seen him in 52 years!
