Last year for laughs and giggles, I worked a bunch of different prefixes using AM for several hours in the contest. Several comments included "not enough sideband suppression", "too much carrier on my signal", "signal too wide". The big pain was remembering to manually switch modes when going from AM to SSB and back.

This should be a noisy weekend. Last year over 4000 phone logs were submitted, but that doesn't take into account all the casual operators that participated that didn't send in a log.

I think the pro-QuaRMtest vs anti-QuaRMtest sentiment forms a major divide in the amateur community, not unlike the current political divide that pervades the country.

The AM QSO on 1880 kept the excrement excitement at bay on that frequency.  But there was a nasty-sounding one from 1-land just above 1885 with crappy audio that sounded like a modulated spark gap transmitter, spewing trash +/- 10 kc/s. When a MI station joined the ongoing AM QSO, the trashy sounding station went away. I joined the QSO later on, and we carried on for a while with no problems, until everyone felt crapped out and decided to close down for the night.

I tuned up and down 160, 80 and 40 for a few minutes before hitting the big switch.  This one seemed to particularly bring out mushy, over-processed, barely comprehensible audio.

There were a few QRM-free spots up and down the band on 80 and 160 to operate normally, for those running a little fire in the wire.  To each his own, but I still fail to comprehend the fun in spending hours and hours chalking up bogus five-nine signal reports and not talking about anything.

Quantity of contacts and the number of different prefixes are the driving forces. No one who is participating is there to chew the rag. Last night, 40 meters was so crowded, it was like trying to squeeze into a NYC subway car during rush hour. Cool stuff if you have the drive, ambition, and fortitude to play in the big boy sandbox. 20 and 15 meters were still active with stations even around midnight.

I thought he was talking about the NCAA basketball tournament. It's called March Madness. I guess that term could well apply to the corntest too.

You will need fortitude to play in the sandbox in this neck of the woods.

I had a member of the local contest club tell me a few years ago that contesters generally don't like to ragchew because they don't really like to talk to hams, meaning all us poor schlubs who aren't contesters.   I'm not making that up.   Contesting is a way to enjoy the hobby if you are anti-social, except I guess they like to talk to hams, if the topic is contesting.

During SSB contests remember the contesters are running very tight rx filters... typically 1.8 kc. So to keep them at a reasonable distance from an AM qso besides turning up the wick be sure you are transmitting full audio bandwidth! No need to limit your high frequency response!
