today's solar flares

I managed to get an audio recording of today's M2.2 class solar flare.

the frequency is 19.500mhz.

There is another in progress as I write this!!(looks like a small one though... C class maybe)

The attatched MP3  was around 17:25utc

Starts off with some oddball noises then at about 50 seconds in you hear the full effect of the flare....

I think the best answer is,,,  that's where I was when the flare started!

I was looking at a wideband spectrum at the time... the VFO just happened to be at 19.500mhz.

Any HF/VHF frequency can be good.

But above 20mhz and into VHF, a preamplifier is usaually needed, ( there's no amplifier in the front end of this radio).

You want to be away from SW broadcast stations.... in a clear spot somewhere.

So, pretty much just a random thing.

I'm confident there would have been very little, if any, difference if this has been recorded +/- 2 mhz or so.

so this "noise" is time-varying and extremely wide-band ?

I did some googling and came across a review of radio waves
generated by solar flares...turns out one of the authors works
two building away from me. Here's a free version:

Don't know if it's related, but I worked Miiki, OH2BAD on CW on 18.077 at 2115 Z/1615 EST this afternoon from the mobile, he had a very rough AU note and said I had one also.  Also heard a couple of other stations with AU roughness on the 17 M band.  Usually band is not open to EU this late in the day on 17 meters.  After working me, Miiki worked a WL7.  A while later, I heard W1AW fairly strong sending code practice on 17 M with a slight rough note, almost never hear them here on 17, suspect it might have been AU backscatter.  Spaceweather.com says K index has only been as high as 3 in the last 24 hours though....but predicts a possible big geo storm tonight/tomorrow.  Sunspot number is 84 - bring em on!

I noticed last evening (Sunday) DX was rolling in on 160.  Several CW signals were 579 or better, from Europe and South America.  About an hour later the DX was all  gone.

At 01:56  , just a few minutes ago, there was an X2.2 class solar flare !

That's a wicked good un !


 

I was unable to access the internet for a few minutes trying to post this...
I assume the flare had something to do with it.
( I'm on Hughes satellite internet)

I stll have the stereo version

Actually I have it in I/Q as a 48khz chunk.

I can redecode it in SSB "binaural" for that spatious feel...
Or in DSB, FM, whatever...
