That was a classic scene. Some have speculated that Fred Gwynne was a ham in real life, but I've never seen any documention of it, QSL's, etc.. When he was not working, Fred and his family actually live on a farm in Taneytown, Maryland not terribly far from me, where he died some years ago.

I heard someone playing the sound clip of herman calling CQ. I searched the net and found it. Its pretty funny.

It's amazing how clear those old B&W photos look today. The old B&W TV left a lot to be desired with so much lost on the receive side. Crappy IF response, tuners, and linearity problems.
