"oh, for the love of tubes and CW"

Hi all,

I want to restore a Radiola 18.  I understand some of the capacitors are in the transformer cans.  I think the cans are potted.  I don't want to pry it open until I know what to expect and what to do.

Has anyone restored a Radiola 18 that could help me with this and a few other questions that I'm sure will come up?

I think I know .... I restored a 2 piece GE / RCA console radio with capacitors in metal cans and potted with pitch or bitumen ... they were very crappy paper caps of 3 or so mfd capacity .... I replaced mine with polypropalene caps ...end of cap issues

Was it difficult to get at the caps?  Were they also encased in the potting?

not too bad to remove from the radio airc ... very messy to get out of the cans .... I chipped mine out with a screwdriver because I did not have matching brown paint for a repaint should you decide to melt it out.... the pitch was not generally more than a fraction of an inch deep unless there was a void it could run down into ...

I have a Radiola 60 that I picked up recently to restore someday. Think it's all there but the tubes, which it uses a buttload of 27's and a 71 for the audio outpoot. Guess I should have known better, but lugged it home anyway.

I have a Radiola transformer in the ole junkbox. It either says or is tagged by previous user: "dual unit", "his masters voice", radiola", "type 26".

It's the driver and output together in one can.

It's for single ended driver's plate to PP grids, and then output's PP plates to speaker.

I don't know about capacitors etc. inside the thing but maybe this ohms check info will help you check yours.

driver side DCR: g-g 16KCT, p-b+ 2.3K

output side DCR: p-p 560CT, speaker 2.6

case is brown, 5.25L x 3.25W x 3.5H with tab mounting.
