I don't understand how a water heater tank could explode at hundreds of psi if a public main water feed is providing 80psi for example. Wouldn't a overheated water heater simply push water back into the main feed line and overcome the 80psi?

In a situation where someone has a well I could see it this happening where pressure would build up to a point where the pressure tank can't handle additional water volume and well pump check valve prevents water from back feeding to the well but on a public supply I do not. It's open pretty much.

Oil fired on demand water heaters are popular here in the Alaska bush...Where electricity is 50 cents a KWH and oil is $6 a gallon....Toyo is the most popular brand...They work well but are noisy.....

I'm a fan of Toyo / Toyostove products. I have heated w/ the Laser 56 and 72 series Kerosene mini furnaces for years.

They are close to 90% EFU and can be rebuilt. Parts aren't cheap but they last and there are tricks that work and are safe.

I find them on Craigslist and fix them.
The new low sulfer Diesel fuel can be used in Toyo products now also.
