This may be old hat to some but worth brousing if you haven't seen it.
I think the look of Millen Co. equipment is in a class of it's own. What a class act.

Dylan,

I certainly agree with your assessment of the Millen gear.  Several I was the selected recipient to receive a complete early Millen station.  Its in perfect shape and I was very proud to be the recipient of the gear.  It included the following pieces:

90831 Modulator
90281 High Voltage Supply
90711 VFO
90801 Exciter-Transmitter
90881 RF Amplifier

Talk about getting up and having a good day!

That's a real nice site. This weekend I'll be the lucky recipient of a Millen rack mounted scope. I don't know the model or if there were more than one scope size, but it's a trade deal and it will be my first piece of Millen gear.

Thanks for sharing the site Grin Grin

Hi Frank,
Needless to say I was thrilled when I got this email from out of the blue from a local unknown Ham to me about the Millen gear.  It was all his Dad's early gear.  His Dad used it once on 10 meters and then became an SK.  All the coils were still in the unopened boxes except for 10 meters.  The final is all set up with a pair of 812H's in push pull.  I need to make a modulator for it, which will probable be a pair of 811's and then build a suitable power supply.  Millen never produced a high power modulator nor a high voltage supply for the final.  I do have the exciter and VFO along with the Millen modulator designed to go with the exciter.
He even donated to me his Dad's SP-600 and NC-183D.  He gave me his fathers original license and a nice picture of his Dad sitting at the Millen station operating the gear.

Terry,
Enjoy the scope.  They had one in a narrow rack panel and another one in a larger panel.  I have the narrow one that I got years ago.

Are you sure about using a 6SN7? That's a dual triode??

Ok, maybe I missed something there. I didn't see a schematic for the dual triode circuit mod. Is there place where I can reference the mod?

Thanks Terry

Several years ago, I donated a 90711 VFO to the AWA for use, if needed, at the W1HRX Millen station.  Wonder if it ever made it there.  I bought it for 8 bucks from a coworker who had picked it up at a country auction in the backwoods of RI.  He thought it was a receiver.  It was in overall good shape except that the "Variarm" lever was broken off.  I made a few QSOs with it on 80 as a QRP rig.  Put out several watts as I recall....anyone from the AWA know what happened to it?

Thanks for the wonderful link.  I really enjoy the history and personal stories behind the radios.

There is nothing wrong with a pentagrid mixer for a PD if you select the right one and do not use its self excited oscillator. Either a 6SB7Y or 6BY6 work very well. A dual triode in a Pullen configuration works best.

That's the funny part, I have never bought a lottery ticket!  But my "radio luck"  has really been a win!  Luck definitely runs my way with vintage radio.

Thats only your opinion. The 6BY6 works very well in the SX-115 and others as designed. It is also the PD of choice in updated HBR's.

As I said earlier, the pentagrid is not my first choice but they perform well for most users when designed properly which includes an external BFO signal of adequate level.
