I have a chance to pick up one of these vlf-lf receivers.  Anyone have any experience with these ? goood ? bad? performance ? is the pow r supply internal ?  etc...

110VAC power supply is internal.  If it's crapped out they're a bitch to fix - soldered in submini tubes.  Pretty decent performance, if you're into VLF.

thanks for the info JN.  i eventually figured out its A1/A2 only so i passed on the deal. its in the dayton flea market if anyone is interested.

It's worth 20 bux, but not much more.  It's also heavy as all hell, so if you buy it don't plan on carrying it around all day.

The full SRR 11-12-13 series are the biggest POS I ever had to work on in the Navy, forever having intermittents, no repair is easy, and today finding parts is rough.

Johns $20 about says it all. There is no A3 on VLF/LF except for the EU/AF BCB which is rapidly dying off. I have a RAK-7, RBA and RBL-5 for those frequencies plus a HRO-500/LF-10 which is what I usually use. Any of the tube HRO's will do fine down to 50kc if you can find the coils.

Building an up converter using toroids should be fairly simple, depending on how low you want to go.
