I wonder what the rest of the story will be?

Ah one of those "whackers".  They give amateur radio a bad name!

How is Amature Radio even related to the guys actions?  Doesn't add a thing to the story...

He's a nut job, and that's all they need to say.

Wonder if he's Timothy's brother?

I'd know if Paul Harvey were still alive hi hi.

Oh no, don't tell me the guy is a ham.  I heard this news on the radio this morning--armed guy wanted to see the president.  described as having a car fitted out with police scanners and police MARS lights and I thought, "Oh no, this guy sounds like one of those tin badge, orange vest wannabe cop emergency rescue storm spotter types--please don't let this guy be a ham...."

"Oh no, don't tell me the guy is a ham. "

"
In Ohio, Randy Fisher, president of the Coshocton County Amateur Radio Association, said McVey was a ham radio enthusiast who had come several times to the group's monthly meetings over the last year or two. Fisher said he was shocked to hear of the arrest and said he last talked with McVey about a week ago via radio and always found him friendly and interesting to talk to.

"I was impressed that he was a public-service-minded type of individual. He really enjoyed using his ham radio for emergency services and that sort of thing," Fisher said  "

Whack jobs like that and 95% of the ssb conversations I hear make me want to rip the license plate off the Mini.  I am close to doing it.

At least the article cited made no mention of him being a licensed ham. Let's hope it stays that way. Sometimes "ham radio" is used in the popular media to describe anyone who tinkers with radios, including scanners and CB's, even if they have never operated an amateur  radio station. If anyone wants to go to the trouble to look him up, there are reverse callsign lookup sites where you can enter a name and it will list all amateur licences in the data base issued under that name.

I got rid of my amateur call plates years ago.

Mainstream amateur radio's departure from its traditional technical roots has increasingly resulted in perceptions like this:

Quote
TIME’s December 31, 2004 issue... featured an article by Lev Grossman about Internet blogging. At one point, Mr. Grossman wrote this:

“Before this year, blogs were a curiosity, a cult phenomenon, a faintly embarrassing hobby on the order of Amateur radio and stamp collecting.”
