I'm getting there, slowly ...

I'm now doing the standard, from the manual, PTT mod

Quick question about this step:
d. ...Connect the other terminal of the relay coil to a long insulated lead, capable of reaching the terminal strip, X26, near the microphone jack, as it is trained along the harness to X26

Now, the relay coil is on one side of the chassis, and the mic is as far away as it can be on the other side.  So...

What is "the harness to X26" ?  I see several possibilities.
Can I just route the lead around the edges of the chassis?
Does it matter?  Am I being too anal-retentive?

Trained around the edge of the chassis will be just fine for this lead.
