"Let's go kayaking, Tommy!" - Yaz

« on: October 21, 2009, 01:17:25 PM »

Remember the old days when operators kept a handwritten log and signed it?

(In the .pdf file attachement at the bottom) --- There's a scanned copy of Steve/WB3HUZ's three hour long session here working DX on Saturday night after the hamfester.  Steve generated a huge pileup on both 75M and 40M. He worked many stations on 40M then spent the rest of the night into the wee hours working 75M DX.

We had dual headphones so I could hear the same action. I must say, Steve's hearing skills have improved markedly over the last year. He is a dedicated operator who pushes himself several nights a week, even in poor conditions and static. Pulling out the weak ones is a skill that can be improved and honed over time.  I heard many stations that were on my threshold of hearing and Steve pulled them out.

Steve seemed to be right at home with the dual diversity receiving system - something most people have trouble getting used to cuz of the ear/brain integration required.  (dual phased beverages AND 40M stack in diversity, etc)

Also shown below are the internet DX spots from Europe of his activity. Evidently he was a popular catch that night.... Grin

I think Todd has some pics of the activity.

* Enlarge the log and you can read all the details. Cool, huh?

Later -

Tom, K1JJ

I did get some good ambient light candids of you two knocking 'em dead along with the shots by Quadzilla, but they are all on the HUZman's cam. Mine got tired and took a nap after taking shots of your towers in the dark. Wink

hehhehheheh.... Neagtive, Negative.  Too funny.

Those sure are strange pics of the tower disappearing into the darkness like that. It looks creepy climbing at night... Shocked  Especially near Halloween.

Maybe Huz will post the night session shots with the headphones on.  Huzman in DX action, ruling the pileup with an iron fist -  with the JJ, KAQ and PJP listening on.

My hand writing is usually good (ok, readable  Wink ), but it was especially bad that night. After several days of traveling and hamfestering, I was tired. I was mainly just writing down the calls so I could reply correctly to those who were calling. My log at home is a little neater. The lines and boxes help.  Grin

You can rule with an iron fist when you have a maul and a muddy water slapper! Dig those 75-meter delta loops at 190 feet - makes my 40-meter loops look puny.

Yeah, you could just see a hint of the first 40m yagi in the photo. Now you can even see #2 at the next level. I just snapped those shots for the artsy-fartsy effect, symmetry and all that. Was a shutterbug before getting into radio.

How did those shots taken without the flash come out, Steve? They looked good on the rear preview screen, but it's pretty small.

That's quite a tally of calls there, OM. Gotta say, your handwriting does resemble small circus and zoo animals in places.  Grin

Still amazed to have heard you work Andorra that night. Haven't heard them since the mid-80s. Gonna hafta dig out my cards and have a look. Not just a principality, but a co-principality. That big stick of 'JJ has a looong reach.

Is that how it looks when you fall?  Shocked

Huz sent me some more shots.  I still haven't seen the dim lighted shack ones.

Bit of rain here this morning too, Frank. Fortunately the 3 acre lawn got finished yesterday, so bring it on. Temps in the mid 70s make it more tolerable.

Hey Tom, you look young in that picture. I bet KM1H could easily recognize you there. Wink Would be interesting to see it as a side-by-side with your B&W jn photo of yesteryear. You look more like the big brother in this one.

Take your pick... Grin

I told Huz that the first pic below should be the TV ad "after facelift" photo. I think I'm best suited for a big smile and just too old to frown... Angry

Is that what it looks like after a body slam in the WWF?

I notice your eyeball is right on that wattmeter needle, making sure it stays up near the top... Cool

The dim lighted shack shot is what it might look like after many beers.

I wondered if they'd be fuzzy since the flash was shut off. I certainly couldn't be accused of being steady at that point point of the night/morning. Then again - pretty much everything was looking that way to me by 1 AM.  Grin

The trusty tripod is more of a necessity with digital cams in these situations, for sure.

Tom, that bottom left jn shot of you is the mate to the present-day, 'mature JJ' look. Gotta love the center shot with mullet and Ron Jeremy 'stache, too.

I see Tom has the biorhythm option on there.

Steve barely showing any sign of life.
