just junked out a 25 pounder with 2 bad gel cells  .... got an inverter transformer (11 pounds) that looks good for a 25 to 30 Amp fil xfmr ...it had no problem lighting up a 4-1000 with a variac on the new primary ... some other windings ...a circuit board with some nice relays and fets ....best of all is some nice heavy 120v connectors and power pigtail that looks handy to power a rack cabinet

Reminds me of the time at work I had my pc go down during a power failure and later when I opened the UPS, I found that a lead to the battery had never been plugged on.

My previous employer threw many many backbreaking 1500 Watt and larger UPS's out....and all they needed were new batteries.
After they found that out, no more throw-aways. But I glawmed onto a back breaker that can handle 4 PCs and their CRT monitors and my audio board/processor rack ans self-powered mon speakers.
Just replace the $100 gel-cell about every 5 yrs.

I have taken many of these apart for the Iron. Just probe around the winding until you find the center tap and you have the filament transformer for a very large tube? Pair of 833's, 4X1, No Problem. There are some rigs running on this board with my transformers. Never throw one of these away without taking out the iron.
