Isn't this a cool looking phased array?

It's from WBCQ. I believe Tron put it up.

As far as I can tell, it's a pair of phased lazy H's for 41M. (or possibly higher freq - tough to tell from the scaling)  I like the way they supported the center feedlines to keep the open line perpendicular to the array to minimize feedline radiation.

Notice the poles on each tower. I once had this configuration up that used FOUR of these in collinear on 20M, back in the eighties. It was beamed to Europe and worked like a bomb at 90' high.  I made my support poles loose and had "bridles" to keep the torque off the tower.

This system is very do-able as a mini version for hams on 10M. Pick your city and aim... :-)

Use an "AM Courtesy Filter" to limit transmit audio bandwidth  +-4.5 KHz, +-6.0 KHz or +-8.0 KHz when needed.  Easily done in DSP.

I don't know the real story behind the building of the WBCQ radio system. But someone or group has put in some long midnight oil burning to get everything up and running. The phased array is definitely a work of art and the coverage for the other 'BCQ transmitters is impressive. There is a nice display of predicted propagation models for all of their frequencies on their web-site.
So, would I be right in assuming that the design and engineering was Timmy and Allan?? Or just Mr Tron??

The 7415 signal is always there (well almost...The Sun still sucks) and I know that there was some creative wiring for the single phase power up there to run the full carrier MW-50 and several other reduced carrier tx's. They have a B'cast A.M. 5KW on-site and I think Allan was jsut approved for an F.M...........All this stuff runs on that lowly single phase connection??? THey must have their own sub-station. Somebody here mentioned that the lights dim in Monticello when Allan hit the plate switch.

Yeah, I wondered what those were... makes sense at 50Kw... :-)



Fred - I think you've been up there... is that white roof the dome of a telescope observatory? I thought I heard that Alan was into astronomy.

On the array design and installation - I'm sure Alan had his hand in it too. I'll axe Tron about the whole story next time I catch him on 75M.
