The bad news: the National Hurricane Center says Gustav is headed for the Gulf coast, and the forecast track is currently aimed at the New Orleans area. See http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at2+shtml/204513.shtml?5day?large#contents for details.

The good news: the wind level probability chart says there's a 30% or less chance of Gustav delivering hurricane-force winds, and so it's unlikely to reach anything near Katrina's power.

If any of you are on a jump team, time to check the batteries.

The site says their streaming audio is down: is anyone else streaming the net?

Time to get out your orange vest and HT belt, place all 6 of your HT's in their chargers, and make sure your 1992 SUV is running and all its rusty parts are bolted on tight, that the amber lights and all 12 of the mag-mount whip antennas mounted on the roof are functioning properly, and that the transceivers piled in the front passenger seat are all transmitting OK.  You don't want to miss out on the free pizza and soda supplied by the Red Cross and the local city and county emergency crews.

That reminds me of one of the spoof "skywarn" banners they had on hamsexy. It pictured a guy standing in front of a funnel cloud, holding his handheld up at it in a threatening manner. The text read "Skywarn: I've got an HT, and I'm NOT AFRAID TO USE IT!"

I'm in Houston on business. There's nothing for weather here, nada. Except the hotel is -full- of evacuees. As I walked in, some guy with apparently no reservation was trying to bluff his way to a $59 rate by saying he booked online, but there's no such attractive rate in this snooty place, at least I never found one.

As it was I'm lucky they didn't sell my room out from under me at 2x the price. I can't prove it but I think they are gouging from what rate ($279) I heard as I stood in line. A bunch of people are out in the parking lot drinking 40's and smoking (no smoking inside) so at least they are having some fun.
