A Houston-area school board will decide if a boy's long hair should keep him from attending school after a superintendent denied the request. The Needville Independent School District said 5-year-old Adriel Arocha's long locks violate school rules.  Needville ISD officials said a dress code guideline would require Adriel to cut his hair before he can enrol in kindergarten.  Superintendent Curtis Rhodes decided in June that the district would not make an exception in the case.

I thought that nonsense with out with the sixties.  Maybe the school does have a right to say that certain clothing is unacceptable for a student, but since school is mandatory under the law, I'd challenge their right to dictate something like hair length.  Hair is part of his body, not "dress".

Hello Don,

So much for individual originality, Think they'll address pulling up their britches and tucken in their under garments...for some reason i find that more in need, I never got the deal on the falling down pants look with things hanging out..i guess it's some kind of statement...to me why make it harder to walk and jump and climb...I dunno..

I agree on the Flake Sixties rerun OM.

Methinks the fallin' down pants, exposed boxers, fake gold teeth, doo-rag, and untied clown shoes DO intentially make a statement.

And that statement is:  'I will never hold a job in my life."

Is it a kindergarten just for boys? If they allow girls, are they required
to get their cut?
Judging people by the length of their hair, like you said should have gone
out with the 60's.
I still question how the military can get away with it. There's not a job
in the military that women don't do right along side men, but the men
have to get their head almost shaved when they go in, and the women
don't.
I tried to get a young first LT in admin to help me make a stink about it when
I was in Air Force Crypto school in 1972, we had the first girls in the school
a couple classes after mine and I kept asking the brass why they could have
long hair I I couldn't.

I hope the kids family sues the shit of out of the school district.

Actually, if you spend a lot of time outside doing work such as farming or construction, letting your hair grow long in the back could be protective of your health. Dermatologists say that one of the most frequent sites for melanoma is the back of the neck, resulting from chronic sun exposure. (Where do you think the term "redneck" originated from?) Maybe that explains why Arab head garb, even for males, includes a scarf that drapes over the neck. For a while farmers supply houses were selling baseball caps with a similar neck scarf attached.

Unfortunatly, paticularly in the city, head lice is a big problem in schools these days.
In those cases it makes sense to limit the amount of hair one has. Lorain schools dictate a "hair hygine" standard for just that purpose.

But in the Texas case, long hair was banned only on boys.  Don't girls get head lice too?

..did i not see somewhere, this kid is an "apache", and wants (or parents), to keep his heritage?...
..i remember the story of my late father. he was an officer in the canadian army, in ww2...my sister brought home this young man, who was visiting from England. this was about 1965. she introduced this guy to my dad...my dad takes one look at him, and says  "...what you need young man, is 4 years in the army, under a good sergeant-major..."  dad went back to weeding his garden..
