HAR-KEN Specialties makes a line of audio adaptors, that connect balanced Canon style XLR plugs to bare wire, via binding posts, barrier strips, RCA phone, BNC, etc.

While it isn't recommended to electrically connect a balanced audio circuit to an unbalanced cable as terminated in a phono plug, these are useful when hooking up newer audio processors that use XLR connectors, to shielded pair wires. You can stop making connectors and cables, and just run 'studio wiring' like Belfoil.
