I see the post by k9ACT about lack of AM activity on 40 meters.........
I find the same to be true on 20 meters...I have been haunting the area around 14.286 in the afternoons  PST with my HB 100th's x 813's
several times a week for the past 3 winters....I can't seem to find a big enough spot to operate AM until all the different morning "net " activity between 14.280-14.290 settles down.. I consistently work W1LYD/vy1, Brian when he is at the cabin in Carcross, Yukon, and ocassionaly  Ashtabula Bill, but mostly I get answers to my call of "CQ AM PHONE" from stations  using solid state equipment and they decide to punch the AM button..This is a good thing, but it is just about the only thing.... I see a definite lack of  AM activity and not many QRO  stations......There is propagation, just no activity....

I called CQ AM on 14.286 yesterday afternoon on numerous occasions, with no takers.  And I have yet to work an Alaska station, on ANY mode.

Steve....Maybe I'll catch you on 14.286...I usually get on in the afternoons 2 or 3 times a week during the week.  I haven't operated much 20M on the weekends because the band is too crowded.I am in Washington state in the winter time and Alaska in the summer.   Hope to work you ....Steve
