P,
I be at Syracuse, NY..

I was on 29.0 fer about 10min. That should have been long 'nuf for a rig to warm up if there were someone interested.
Generally, I'll go to the beacon subband and listen for a while. Amongst others, there was a beacon in EM53 (Wisc.). Stations herd(SSB)....   a 4 talking with a 9 and a few 5's.

How long the band was open? I was only on  for 1/2 hour. General comment...  the beacons usally operate omni-directional and with lower power, say 10W.. When the band is 'open' one do not need a lot, but, direction/gain antennas with moderate power levels make the band more 'usefull' . What I'm saying here is, the band is open more than most think.  AF9J seems to have done work on the 10m/6m bands; she may have more to say on the different propigation modes.

The last solar cycle minimum, I was able to work texas in the mid-afternoons while ricebox mobile... I've also been able to work into canada and the Greate Lakes area at 4AM. This was on the last full weekend in June......  klc

Is the best frequency to call CQ on AM 29.1, or 29.0? (or does it matter?)

Until the MUF climbs consistently above 29 MHz, I would call all CQ's down near 29.0, 29.02 MHz, etc.

Short skip now (Wednesday afternoon) from 3 land to 9 land on 10 meters.  Also some AM heard around 29.005.

Considering our weather (we had TWO tornadoes that day), you probably heard Sporadic E (severe weather is a contributor to Sporadic E).  One thing that indicates it, is the very geography specific signals.  BTW, EM53 is not in WI, it is in MS. BUT, EN53 is in WI.  It starts only a few miles north of where I live (northeastern corner of EN52).  Yep, sounds like Es to me.
