WELLFLEET, Mass. - Local historians for decades thought the 30-foot tall lighthouse that once overlooked Wellfleet Harbor had been taken down and destroyed in 1925.

Turns out, it had just been moved to the California coast.

The fate of the cast-iron tower was uncovered last year by lighthouse researchers and reported by Colleen MacNeney in the June 2008 edition of Lighthouse Digest.

MacNeney told the Cape Cod Times it was her most exciting discovery.

Sounds like my place.  Anything, any time, any size, can inexplicably vanish off the face of the earth never to be seen again.

My guess is that someone removed the lighthouse and charged for disposal, but actually took it away on a ship and sold it to somebody else, and made a nice profit, and never told the people back where it came from.  Somebody knew in the new location, because a plaque refers to the lighthouse's origin.  Maybe it was a conspiracy involving local politicos back in New England.

I am imagining the surprise of a lighthouse aficionado, doing a double take and then realizing that yes indeed, it was the very same lighthouse.  How that can be determined with certainty, I am not sure.  I guess the plaque, and the fact that the lighthouse is identical to the one that was removed, are the proof.

I suppose if London Bridge could be moved all the way from England to Arizona, moving a lighthouse coast-to-coast should be a breeze.

It doesn't suprise me at all that a lighthouse could be secreted from one place to another. I lost a PDP-11 complete with VT-320 terminal in a couch for several years. Oh, THATS where that thing is..

Doesn't matter how it got there. It'll probably wind up on eBay now.
