Gary's Station at Syracuse may soon be designated an
OFFICIAL HOMELAND SECURITY STATION
because of his help intercepting a criminal. Here's the story:

(MP3, file size 757K)

SO, with that in mind, pending the results of the poll,
I would like to lead a passing of the hat to
buy Gary an official law enforcement symbol as follows:

I heard a story over the air years ago about a longwave listening enthusiast who extended a beverage receiving antenna across his back field.  The property was fenced off with the addition of conspicuous No Trespassing signs distributed evenly along the fence.

One day this lady horseback rider decided to cruise through the field.  She and the  horse easily jumped the fence,  but when she hit the beverage wire she nearly decapitated herself before being thrown off the horse.

Not sure if she was seriously hurt, but she ended up suing the landowner.  Dunno if she ever actually collected anything.

This story was passed along to  me as a warning when I was first talking about putting up a beverage for 160.  Finally put it up about 5 years ago; 900 ft. of #8 copperweld 10' off the ground.  So far, no dead horseback riders.

Great event--I am rather concerned though----
I think we should hold our nickels on the badge and consider taking up a collection for Gary's legal de-fence fund.
I can see it now--a bored & bulging belligerent bureaucrat deciding to look into the permit and zoning status of the possibly illegal INR felon flipping fence.

Great Job Gary.. It would be nice to have you go on the circuit talking to the proponents of restrictided covenants in housing developements and showing the the "benifits" of ham antennas..I think I will officially pass the petrified apple core to you on that one.. Badge Yes!!

There are all kinds of gems stored / archived in the QSO section.

Here I will save the MP3 as the link below rather than over on my FTP site in case I ever drop it out for some reason.

The receiver was the venerable R390A, diode output, probably feeding a DAT recorder. I then took the DAT output into the home's computer terminal and boiled it down to an MP3.

No EQ nor additional compression in the receive and A/D conversion process.
