Some of it is sinking in....!

So, where can I see a schematic of a "Class A series modulator,"  the one that is horribly inefficient, but sounds relatively uncomplicated?

Or is it just one side of a stereo amp and a mod tranny on the PA power lead? Wink

Thanks,

Are FETs supposed to glow like that?

Not sure about class A....

But if you're going to go class E amplifier...
Why not go with a Class H, or PDM   modulator?
Those are relatively uncomplicated to build, (especially with circuit boards and kit of part available from wa1qix)

With solid state H or pdm series modulator, there is NO mod transformer....

(Not sure if a tube series modulator requires a transformer, or not....I suspect not...?)

The modulator kits definitely seem like the way to go, I'm just curious about the other method.

If you take the class 'H' modulator, remove the 1/2 voltage supply and the 'bottom' power transistor(s) you'll end up with a class A modulator . That is the 'top' transistor(s) will be conducting all the time.  You will of course need significant heat sinkage.    The efficiency / compexity tradeoff point probably depends on what you have available.
