Say what you want but I liked the old' coot, IF you could keep him off his favorite subject. Several times after a hiatus of many qso moons he'd recall me, my exact location, stuff about where I lived in Tioga Co. , PA, etc. and I'm pretty sure he didn't keep such detailed notes.
Didn't need qrz.com. , Gps or any of our modern crutches including pencil lab

He had a great memory and was quite chatty on other subjects.
And he mirrored a lot of my experiences in R /W battles with his road in front of house, etc. being in the biz for most of my career I could sympathize with him from both sides of an issue... Maybe now more than ever in light of recent US supreme decisions concerning eminent domain.
He also enjoyed giving nature tours of his property to kids, maple syrup collecting and such.
And speaking of cranks and agenda driven qso's , we have short memories. Much of archeoQRM'ing got its start in the constant CW and voice trash overlays to his transmissions.
I won't repeat the most common, but most of you know how proclivity specific they were.
From thence comes our now normal modern, high (low) art of dirty QRM 'ing.
I really thought some of his one way qso's defined a real character. ....almost up there with the Possom net, heh heh.
