I just added a 2nd Turner 22 to my collection and it came with a surprise!   A chamois mic cover / bag with the Words "Turner Microphone".   It's the 1st one I recall ever seeing..  Was this a standard offering back when new?  Just one of those neat things that I like to find out about.  Steve W1TAV

could it have been an original item used with packing to keep the element and top part clean? Reminds me of something used to keep silver plated items from tarnishing.

Never saw one for the Turner mics, Steve. Nice little accessory. It's great for keeping dust off the mic while not in use.

Most manufacturers who made mics of any quality offered these. RCA even had a zippered version for the 77 line. They were mainly designed to protect the mics during transport. A lot of studios and stations had mics for recording or remote use that were stored away when not in use. I've got one for EV, Shure, and a nice homemade bag on one of the RCA-74B mics.

The 33X would appreciate one of those.  Wink

Put a sock on it!

I got one for my Shure Prolog.

I do have 2 Turner 22X mics. Great for vintage blues harp!

Well I guess this is a fairly uncommon item to have survived. Budldley, FB on the Blues Mic.. Yes indeed, when I was looking for a second Turner 22, I am relatively sure  I was bidding against harp players..  One to the items I was (still am) looking for is the E-V PTT Stand.  I can't help but to think these are being tossed aside (trashed).   I have a E-V 638 that I would like to use with the E-V PTT stand on my S-Line..  (off topic on the AM Board

Which stand are you looking for, Steve? A 423A like the one in your avatar or the 419? I'd guess the former, if you're using a 638 with it. The 419 is generally associated with the 664. Both show up from time to time, think I paid $9 for a NOS 419 and $5 for a 423A with a 606 crystal head, both at the Rochester Hosstraders some years back. I still see them at 'fests.

Unfortunately, you're probably right about them getting cast aside by musician types. They'd have no need for a desk stand. I actually experienced this with a 444 mic sold on ebay sometime back. It was listed in the ham radio section,  but the winner of the auction asked that I cut the mic element out of it and throw away the the rest. Apparently the older 444s used the same mic element as the JT-30 style small head mics they prefer. One guy at Dayton told me he actually didn't care for the 22 or 33 style heads because they were too 'thick' to hold onto properly while playing. No doubt why you see so many heads hacked off Turner +2 or +3 CB type desk mics for auction - a smaller, better fit. So maybe there's hope for their older crystal mics surviving in the world of radio. The newer desk mics are far more numerous.

Todd,

Great idea on the 444 mic cartage.. I have a JT-30 I picked up at Nearfest that needs a cartage and one extremely yellowy looking 444 (Broken PTT, cracked base etc..)   that does work....  Steve
