he heh.  Grin

I forgot to add - The extra holes marked with a x will be filled in using the "leading" method ( basically soldering or welding in metal to replace he air thats there now then ground smooth. I'm not sure I can do it, but if I cant, most any body shop can. I'm going to try it. I have a finishing sander and 2 full cans of HD black crackle spray paint that will be cooked at 170 degrees, followed by a spritz of semi gloss Deft Lacquer.

Oh yes, as to why? I feel like it.  Cool It's only value is that it gets me on the air and gets me using my brain and hands. A Matchbox with 14 extra holes and 40% homebrew components - it's better off becoming a Derb-Box. It's monetary value as a Matchbox was destroyed a long time ago.

aargh. now wifey telleth me she does not want me running the oven in the house with paint on it for fear of the birds snorting it and falling over dead. Now I sorta wish I had left it alone. Oh well, it will look even better powdercoated. I cant undo it.

Better yet put the matchbox in the sun and let mother nature cure the paint.

it's just not that hot here yet. I'm betting the results would be pretty bad. You got to have a hot sun and a windless day. If you try it outside, I dont think it would even wrinkle with our wx right now.  Maybe I could bake it in the oven and get a even heat then take it outside to spray ass backwards, but if we got a sudden T storm it would b crap. Once it gets paint on it, it aint coming back into the house until it has no more smell. maybe I can convince her to let me oven heat then spray and cure in garage.

Wife got called back into work last week and she turned out to have more work than she thought she would, so we have a bit more dough than normal. There's a powder shop less than 3 miles from me, so I'll take over there and see how much they want. Decide from there I guess.

I understand, birds are really sensitive to such things and it can kill em dead.

You can't powdercoat over bondo (thats what they told me on the last cabinet I tried to have done)--powdercoat needs high temp to cure and the bondo curls up and dies. I hear that there is some high temp filler-but have not tried it. If you can get some TIG artist to fill the holes the aluminum would be easy to grind. If you want it wrinkle send it to me and I will do it in my oven at the plant. I have done quite a few speaker cabinets, etc. and if I stink up the shop after 3pm nobody cares.

I'm sure I can get a tig guy locally here. One about 3 miles from my place. I'll take it into him on Monday morning and see if we can get Hambone's holes removed. And you know what I'm after in regards for the finish better than a non-radioman would.

Skip, you got a deal.  I'll send it to you blasted, ground, and ready to go. I'm betting it will look really snazzy. I'll fill you in on this thread on Monday - n thanks for the offer.  Grin

DRB, How about using a larger cabinet, some tin foil and a heat lamp? Or possibly somebody with a large welding rod oven. I've used them at work to dry out transformers.

our hair dryer is wimpy.  Tongue it barely heats hair.  Smiley she likes it though, and I sure dont need one! She 's all concerned about the birds getting a whiff. Better to outsource I think. If one of the birds did keel over, I'd never live it down.

I gotta get the holez welded up first anyways. Never was gonna use bondo, i dont like the stuff. Gotta be all metal. I was on last night but static was so bad i just flipped it off after some minutes tuning around. I'm going out there now.

hey dont forget, the hagerstown show is next week. 15 minutes from the house here, so I'll go no matter what.

lemme get them holes filled in.

Wish I could go down to the Hagerstown hamfest. It's only about 45 minutes away, but I don't have time. I never thought that a hair dryer would work for wrinkling paint. I figued that the air would have blowed the paint all over the place.

If you are not using bondo then you may want to ask the powdercoat dude --sometimes you  may find he will coat it cheaper than shipping to MN. My last quote was for a complete 30K cabinet--$120
Anyway, I would be glad to squirt it with the black wrinkle (or grey) as I have cans of both. We have a shop oven that we use for epoxy curing and I have had great results with plain old spray cans. Now is a great time as I have a speaker cabinet to do.

I use a heat gun for wrinkling, it works well and after a bit of practice (and I definitely had some!) you can fine tune the amount/texture of wrinkling.  And when you are not wrinkling paint you can use it for heat shrink tubing.

I would add always wear a good respirator mask with appropriate filtering as you are going to create fumes during the heating process.

Skip,

I'll let ya know what the dope is. May not be until Tuesday Wed. nite. The wx here is going to suck tomorrow and I have to go into work with my wife so I can be monitored for trouble.

She has to drive me everywhere, so when she's working I'm stuck at work with her. I cant drive myself to the powder coating place or the TIG/MIG place until she gets time off during the workweek. Slows things down a lot.

I would just be shipping the prepped front/sides/top part of it to you, the rest is ok as is i guess.
