I made it to Ham-com,saw several ole friends and walked away with a long sought-after AR88 receiver.  So, I guess I have my work cut-out for me.  It's complete, but needing a bit of TLC.

Should have taken some pics.  I was only there on Friday.  It seemed to me the number and quality of boat anchors was down quite a bit this year.  Maybe Saturday was better.  Quite a few of the outdoor flea vendors packed up and left by 11:00am on Friday.

There were a couple of sellers with Heathkit SB-line stuff,  some of which looked very nice, one 75A4 and one dirty 51J4 that I saw, none of the usual Johnson boxes, some pretty sad looking SP-400's, and a small number of the usual Halli/Hammarlund boxes, plus some Drake.  Someone had an R-390 -- don't know if it sold, it wasn't terribly clean.  And a lot of the usual (literally) junk.  I offloaded quite a bit (because it was priced right), but even though I went with money to spend, found nothing I couldn't live without -- save for one hot dog.

Thought about going back Saturday with my Rick Mish "remanufactured" Collins R-390 and EAC R-390A, but finally concluded that, since I wasn't going to give them away, risking the hernia would be a fools errand ... I took them to Ham-Com 3-4 years ago and got many lookers and dial twiddlers and oohs and ahs, and comments about having bought "theirs" for $25 off a curb somewhere, but not even one ridiculous offer

$25 off a curb, maybe. It was probably found there hidden in a case of sour grapes. Well there is no telling about folks, we are all interested in the hobby but when something is priced way beyond an individual's means but they really want it, that is a strong stimulus and then they have a choice how to react. If they will think about it for a moment first they would not embarrass themselves with such remarks.   I think I remember seeing that R-390. It was IIRC beautiful, pristine, maybe polished as well.

I'm looking for the mate to the 75A-2, a transmitter the KWS-1. Then will be all tubes station except for a couple of emergency portable HF/VHF radios. The KWS-1 is usually not in my price range. One may come along some day but making de-value-ing remarks about available specimens at fests won't speed the process.

Got the AR88 all cleaned up, tuned up and fully operational.  

I don't think I have ever seen a rig with so much oil mixed with the dirt that was in this one.  It must have spent
its previous life in an oil filled environment judging from the amount of oily film that covered everything.

  I added a carrier level meter where one had previously been, modified
the BFO for a stronger injection for SSB, added a toggle on-off switch to relieve the HV on the existing power switch, replaced a few caps and  repainted the cabinet.

That is a nice looking AR88...I got one at the Phoenix Hamfest this last winter....Wasn't really looking for one, but this one was nice and the price was right ...I wound up hauling it around in the back seat area of my truck all winter whilst we were on vacation....over some pretty ruff terrain.It survived and works very well...Mine is a Canadian military model with a rebuild sticker from the 60's from an aircraft radio facility in Edmonton...No "s" meter...Great receiver

That's a real nice looking unit there. Could the oil be due to someone constantly oiling the gears or using WD-40?

I saw no disrespectfulness anywhere and did not intend offense. It is a small comedy when people make remarks at fests, that's all to me.
