Has anyone had much experience with this TX? I am particularly interested in any problems with the modulator.
It seems a very reliable TX but occasionally the left hand side modulator 4 - 400 tube plate will glow red and then cool down and be OK for several hours. Anyone had this before?  Thanks  Bill V73WJ

Bill,
Try to get a hold of Dave, K2DK, he has 2 of them. I know that he has similar problems with his. I think he has 1 on 160 and 1 on 75.

Thanks a lot for your response much appreciated. I have just been busy fixing a Nautel 30 KW class D solid state transmitter after its Andrews antenna coax got water inside and boiled which didn't do much good hence the tardy reply Should mention that I'm a Doctor Broadcast Engineer now 70 who is helping some Marshallese churches relay a FM broadcast to the outer islands of the republic via AM on the medium wave. I retired to the Philippines with my Filipina wife and kids in 2003 but retired from retirement last year and came to the Marshall Islands. We were in Palau before retiring where I was in charge of communications as well as being a pastor. Life gets complicated don't it? I'm also ex military and was G4CWA too as well as T88BA and a lot of other calls as the job took me around the world.
Thanks again I really appreciate your help. Any ideas of an e-mail address for the gent concerned?

Bill,
Try --K2DK@comcast.net-- (delete the anti spamming dashes)
He loves those Bauers, he has 2 of them.

Thank you once again! The 707 I am busy with had been butchered by a previous owner who didn't know what he was doing so it has been a rebuild to some extent putting things back the way the original designer intended. Sadly I've had to use non vintage capacitors, resistors etc. It is a fine rig though and there's an RCA rig coming from the US just hope there isn't as much work. It's not the technicalities but the sheer lack of parts on an island like Majuro in the RMI. It takes such a long time to get anything and costs a lot for postage especially since the US postal Service took away the Zip Code. Much goes astray now. Have sent a letter to K2DK.

Bill,
the nickname is a a long story. Many years ago myself and the Derb were cutting it up pretty hard in one of the big friday night break in sessions on 3.885. We had everyone laughing in stitches. From that point on many of the "AM elders" started calling me that. I used it for years as a "pen name" on the old AM bulletin board, and just continued it on here. Anyway by now just about everyone in the east coast knows who "the slab bacon"  is. Many still call me that on the air.
Also keep in mind that at one time I was up to around 340lbs, so I was
"the slab bacon, with the fat meat shakin" Its just for fun.

Best 73, and I hope Dave was able to help you out. With 2 of those things, I always tease him that he is a "glutton for punishment"

Thanks a lot for clearing that one up! I shall call you by your nom de plume in future sir! With such an honorable history it would be a crime not to!
David has really been most helpful in that he has provided me with lots of material including information on modifying the beast to short wave (which I am now contemplating) to 5.990 MHz which is our allocated frequency for the broadcast band out here. I really appreciate your assistance, thankyou! Next project is an RCA BTA series 1 KW TX to get going on 1.557 MHz.
Cheers and 73
