People were happy when the tower was dropped.  I'd consider it a day of mourning.

They were happy because now the site could be divided into 1.5 acre lots, and 20 unit condo's (or 'Projects' as I like to refer to them as) could be built on each lot.(Like sardines)

Interesting to see some local aussie news on the amfone.

My parents were devoted listeners to UZ on our Astor Mickey Rx.
They were avid gamblers so the program content was not always so great on saturdays, but I still recall the Looverly AM sound from that lounge room console.
Listened to it on home brew crystal sets too.

Why did they drop the tower?  Replaced with a new one, or the station went dark?

Grabbed this off the net Don:

The old 3UZ tower at Lower Plenty has been demolished to make way for a housing estate.
The station now transmits from a nearby site
multiplexed into a mast shared with other stations.
"The Greater" 3UZ was one of Melbourne's High
rating stations in the golden days of radio but then they all rated well as there were not that many on the dial and none of this modern FM stuff.
3UZ is now a racing and sport station "Sport 927"

The  tower looked in good enough condition that it could have been disassembled and reused.  Wonder if they plan to pull up the ground radials as well.

The same thing happened to the old VOA site north of Cincinnati next to WLW.  It's now some kind of crackerbox development.
