Description: My first shack. In the basement of my parents house in the Bronx. Between two 6 story tall apartment buildings. I had a dipole and a 3 el TA-33 on the roof of the next door building... the landlord who lived there "didn't expect such a big antenna" he told my mother... Ok, in the shack, shiny front panel is a pretty close copy of the '65 or '66 handbook single 6146 rig. The keyer is a homebrew paddle assembly out of an older QST, with a little Digi-Key IC electronic keyer - ever hear of those guys?? This is right before I nagged my father into splurging for an SB-301 receiver kit, there are some ARC-5 receivers sitting on the table there... a 4CX5000 pull sideways on the stainless steel food service table next to me, I still have that table today - it holds up my drill press & big vise in the shop now, solid it is. The pull was from Bob, W2UO (sk) who was my ham radio mentor. Great guy. Those are QSTs and Popular Electronics behind me on the shelf. Ah yes, the phone. The phone had "speed dial". Meaning I changed the govenor that was in the back of the dial mechanism so it would just about as fast as the PBX could stand - wham!
This was the shack cleaned up - it rarely if ever looked like that for real... hmmmm... I shot the photo using time exposure on a Contax I camera...
I was able to work Bob W2UO who lived next door... and Mark, ex-WA2GCS down the block, and Rich, ex-WB2DLJ about a mile away, and a few other Bronx boys... in short no signal! ;_)
