Parachuting with AM radio back then? It would be scary to hit the ground with a heavy AM rig on yer back

No problem.

Just use a rig designed for airborne use.

Say an ART-13.

Grin   Those ART-13 were for use IN the plane.

All seriousness aside, Jesse had a small (not sure just how small, remember this is the late 1960's) six-meter rig with him on the jump. He transmitted to the ground with it. The signal was received at his station and retransmitted to 75-meters. The recording was made from the 75-meter signal.

I thought I heard him say that it was a BC-610E model. Can you imagine jumping out of an airplane with a 610 strapped to your back?

It would be much easier to do today with a class E rig. You could use a wind mill generator for power part of the way until you opened your parachute and then switch over to the newly invented solar panel parachute Grin Grin  This would be the green way to do it!
