Thanksgiving was a chance to escape the flat land of IL and spend a few days in the Smoky Mountains of Eastern TN.  The weather was near perfect with cool temperature and only a little rain one day.  After driving down we spent the first afternoon in Cade's Cove which is a preserved settlement in a beautiful location.  The only downside is a lot of people apparently do not see enough deer where they live so we were stuck for about an hour in a traffic jam on the loop road while people gawked at deer.

There is fresh corn meal available ground at the mill using a truly renewable energy source.  As you might expect, the nicest house back in the old days was the Miller's house.

We also spent some time at an old one room school house further east in the park.  It had a great area to play in around it but having a cemetery adjacent to the school was a strong reminder of the harsh times in the mountains and many of the graves were of very young children and infants.

There was a little radio content to the trip.  I picked up a Johnson Courier project from John WB4BFS and had a nice visit with him.  I will be sending him a photo I took of him in his work area and we will see if he is brave enough to post it later Smiley

Beautiful! Thanks for sharing those great photos Rodger.
Reminds me of the Waltons, boy did I love that TV show.
Set in a different state perhaps, but same simpler (better?) life.....

After moving all of that radio stuff up from Buffalo, simpler is really starting to sound good...
