Some time ago I pulled a  couple of Heathkit capacitor checkers out of a dumpster.  They look to be in fair condition, but I have not tried to fire them up.

One is a IT22, a rather dinky little thing with just a few basic functions, but the other is a IT28, which looks more like it might be a real piece of test equipment.  They each use a magic eye tube for the indicator.

Has anyone here ever used one of those, and would either one be useful enough to try to get them to work?

I need manuals, particularly for the IT28.  Photocopies or attachments would be OK, and I don't need the assembly instructions, just the schematic, operating instructions and technical data.

You can find the schematic for the IT 28 here,

http://www.vintage-radio.info/heathkit/

Don't know about the 22, but someone may have a schematic out there somewhere.

Don: I use a Heathkit IT-11 which is about the same thing as the IT-28. Good checker and it will show leakage and shorts. Its one piece of test equipement that I use every day. You mite want to change out the caps before using. I didnt bother to test them, just removed them and replaced with new ones. Not to many to replace.
Sorry, I dont have a schematic.

I prefer more than just the schematic.  I'd like complete specifications and instructions on exactly how to use the thing.  I prefer not to have to re-invent the wheel when the knowledge is already out there.

The 22 is pretty self-explanatory.  Not much to it. Just two terminals and a selector knob, with the magic eye readings painted on the panel.  The 28 looks more sophisticated.

I was wondering if someone might have a complete manual and would be willing to copy or scan the schematic, specifications and operating instructions.  I don't need the step-by-step assembly instructions.

I was told that BAMA took the Heathkit manuals off its site, but that they are still available on some website in the UK.  Does anyone know the URL for that site?

Unfortunately the Heath manuals have been removed from any site that had them posted and all that remains is the schematic on a site elsewhere.  I am not sure where the one I posted is located but someone mentioned Britian.

The former W7FG site still sells the manuals and so does Data Professionals.  Data Professionals is the guy who claims to have the intellectual rights to all the manuals and asked Ken to remove them from BAMA.  Short of someone sending you a copy, there isn't anyone who provides them anymore for download.

Don,
Try this link http://www.mods.dk/manual.php?brand=heathkit. Only one chance per month now, I think, for a free download. A friend gave one to me and after a little cleanup, new filter caps, testing the toobs, cleaning switches; I found it to be amazingly accurate for both capacitance and resistance checks.

And so do I.

Certainly there is someone somewhere who has a personal copy of the manual and would be willing to xerox a copy or scan one.  I'll keep checking around the ham radio sites and also see what http://www.mods.dk/manual.php?brand=heathkit has to offer.

I use my IT-11 quite often. I also have the manual (4.3 MB pdf).
See my IT-11 and more, here on my web-site: http://www.heathkit.nu/heathkit_nu_IT-11.html

Thanks for all the info.  I think I downloaded and saved all the  data I need for the IT28, plus I was able to download the entire manual from the mods.dk site.  I had to download the déjà vu reader to view it, but that worked without a glitch.

It was a good dumpster find.   Smiley
