Works nicely in Mac Safari.

Interesting concept, but I'd rather have a screen full of thumbnails
than the record cover flip view, reminds me of iTunes.
Thumbnails would load quicker.

Cool idea however!

FAQ

What is Searchme?

Searchme is a new search engine that uses visual search and category refinement. We think it will help you find what you’re looking for, faster, with a lot less spam. It’s a new way to search that takes advantage of the size and bandwidth of today’s Internet and the increasingly visual way that we all interact online.

How is it different from other search engines?

We like to think that we’re different because we’re very visual in how we present search results. Users can see the web pages in the results before they click through, and real-time category suggestions narrow down the number of results immediately.

We asked the question — could we somehow do search differently? We came up with a couple ideas, we’ve been quietly working on them, and we’re learning as we go. We built the search engine from scratch with our visual presentation in mind, and over the past three years we’ve tried a lot of different filaments in the light bulb, so to speak. We’re building Searchme in baby steps, and we hope to increase our coverage as we go.

Is it just built on top of Yahoo! or Google?

No, it’s our own. We built our search engine from the ground up, so we could optimize it for category suggest and visual presentation.

Who should use Searchme?

Anyone can use Searchme — casual users, professionals, college students. Some people prefer a visual presentation instead of text, and it’s those people we hope to serve. We want to provide them with an option.

What kind of bandwidth do users need?

Searchme is designed for the size and speed of today’s Internet. All that users need is a high-speed connection like DSL or a cable modem, which more than 75% of all U.S. users have.

How many:

Pages indexed? Over a billion. It’s not exhaustive as of yet, but we’re growing it daily.
Servers? We don't share exact numbers, but we have thousands of servers indexing, imaging, and serving search results to users.
Employees? We’re small, but we’re growing at a fast pace, and we’re always looking for good people. Interested?
How are query results listed?

The order is determined by a number of factors. Every major search engine uses a combination of algorithmic and editorial features to rank results by relevance. We do the same, but we also categorize the results to make it easier to find what you’re looking for.

How frequently do we update the pages?

We update our index as often as every 10 minutes depending on the type of information and how often it changes. We’re working to make our index one of the freshest online.

What about search relevance?

Our system learns how to get more relevant over time, so our relevance will improve with every search performed.

When do we expect to have a comprehensive, deep index?

We feel that our index provides adequate coverage, but we know that we have a long way to go. We’re refining it daily, so we expect it to get better every day.

What about maps, news, stock quotes? How/when are you going to be full service?

As we’ve said, we’ve been primarily focused on creating a great search experience, and that’s taken all of our efforts. We will be providing these other services when the time is right for us.

What are your patents?

We have several patents that relate to vertical search technology, our user interface, and our base search engine.

What about copyright?

We believe that we’re in compliance with the fair use of copyrighted material, but we plan to be very responsive to requests from copyright holders to remove any infringing pages that might be in our index. We think that most sites will be happy with the extra traffic that will come from us.

What about adult content?

We make every effort to allow people to filter out adult material from their results. We’ve done our best, and we’d like to think that we’re working at the same level as other major search engines. It’s impossible to be perfect with today’s Internet, but we’ll continue to improve on this as time goes on.

When was Searchme created?

We started working on the project in January of 2005.

When was Searchme incorporated?

We accepted our first round of funding in June of 2005.

What are your next moves/future plans?

This is just the beginning, and we have a lot of exciting work to do. We’re continuously refining our relevance and experimenting with new features and functionality. Our plans are to continuously improve our core engine and visual interface based on feedback from our users. In fact, if you have any suggestions, we’d love to hear them. Let us know.

Finally got it to work in FF3 and Safari. It was a Flash settings problem.

Interesting display. A little like stacks in OS X 10.5 (See image below.) The results don't seem to be as on target as Google.

As far as thumbnails, OmniWeb has has them for a long time, although not necessarilty for search. There is also an add-on for Firefox that will add thumbnails to Google searches. See Google Preview.
