I forgot, AM is all about bandwidth. The 850 I can easily make wide, the FT 1000 I will have to buy an expensive filter to go wide with.


If that's all AM was about, many of us would have been gone long ago. If wide is your only passion, FM is allowed above 29 MHz.
Well, since I have been monitoring 29.0000 AM the past week anyway, and my Yaesu FT 1000 has FM on it, can you tell me what the 10 meter FM Call Frequency is, so I can explore that too ?

The repeaters are generally set up ever 20KC with a  -100 KC ofset. So try 29.620 and up.

I would want simplex, especially since I don't know how to adjust this FT 1000 for repeater offset, PL Tones, etc.

I never really got into the ESSB SSB stuff very much.
Those guys seem to be chasing hi fidelity audio that I am not so sure is even possible on SSB

In fact, I always wondered why they did not chose AM or FM instead of SSB, if they wanted really high fidelity audio ?

I don't know anything about programming a 1000, but I'd guess you've got the use of 2 VFOs. Load one up on one frequency for receive, and the other 100 KC lower to transmit.  

Its the right thing to do.

As KLC said, just operate split using one VFO for the transmit frequency and the other for receive for 10M FM.  It has been a long time since I fooled with 10M FM but I don't believe access tones are commonly used for 10M repeaters.  (and given the number of repeaters exceeds the total number of repeater users in many areas they are more of a nuisance than a benefit on 2 meters).

I worked Japan on 29.4 several weeks ago with 40-45 watts.

hi fidelity audio SSB is an oxymoron!
