THe nice warm BIG sound comes from some engineering and planning.
It's not just processing the hell out of the audio from the microphone.
The FT101 is a good beginning and a start for really nice audio. A linear amplifier is next in the chain...........an amp that's not afraid to put out peak undistorted power without falling in on itself. A reserve of 2500 watts is a dream but do-able
Something close to an Ameritron AL1500 or similar with a serious power supply.

It's fun to experiment

I STARTED DOWN THAT SAME PATH Embarrassed THERE IS NOTHING LIKE PLATE MODULATION.THE FT101 WOULD NOT GIVE ME THE HARD PUCHING LOW HITTING AUDIO THAT I CRAVED Cry SOLD THE 101 BOUGHT A EF JOHNSON VALIANT AND VX2000   THE AUDIO DIFFERENCE IS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY

Do the mods at the link Kevin posted and you'll have a rig that will sound better than 99% of the transmitters on the air. I ran a 101 for quite a few years with these mods. Of course, Bill, W3DUQ started it all many years ago. Anyone who ever heard Bill knew he had great sounding audio and lots of it.

Go for it!

I think for ur 1st basic antenna,a horizontal dipole cut for 75 meters,120 or 130 ft,  fed with open wire, even the brown stuff, through a open wire tuner, like a johnson matchbox or homemade ,up as high as possible is a good choice. You would be able to use it on all the ham bands.

The last thing Id do is use the MLA-2500 on AM. Not only do you have just 600W of Pd but they are around $1000 a pair to replace unless you find a deal on good used ones.

Now if you wanted to get creative a couple of 3CX800's in place and with modified cooling would run nice and cool BUT dont exceed 1200W key down on tune up unless you want to buy a new transformer. Even a single 800 is better than two 8875's and you could even make money on that deal. Full output medical pulls are in the $300-350 range.

Or get a better amp. BTW, I have a MLA-2500 with full output original tubes and is a back up shelf queen for a LK-500ZC and an Alpha 76PA.

A good radiating antenna beats any amplifier for getting the signal out!

I say, if you've got the room for a 75m Inverted V, then you've got the room for a Delta Loop.

haul the pyramid-shaped antenna as high as possible at the peak, stretch out the bottom two points as wide/high as possible and feed it as suggested with open-wire line and an open-wire tuner.  It's about 250'~260' of wire in the air, but when you boil it down to brass tacks, it's simply a folded dipole, pulled apart, and takes up no more room than a 75m inverted vee.
