How's this for something new to worry about?

We have all heard about the feared dangers of magnetic fields emanating from high tension power lines and electric appliances in the home.  We have also heard about the alleged dangers of exposure to radio waves, and now the FCC requires us to make electro-magnetic radiation assessments of our amateur  radio installations.

But now, automobile tires?

Magnetic fields emanate from radial tires due to the presence of reinforcing belts which are made of magnetized steel wire.  When these tires spin they generate alternating magnetic fields of extremely low frequency (ELF), usually below 20 Hz.  The fundamental frequency of these fields is determined by tire rotation rate and has a sinusoidal waveform with high harmonic content.  The tire-generated fields can exceed 2.0 μT in the seat level in the passenger compartment of vehicles.  If these fields are biologically active, failure to detect them could compromise exposure assessments associated with epidemiologic studies.

This is a serious issue of concern to all of us and our families. You
can't afford not to take this seriously!
   However there's no need to
abandon the car and go back to horse and buggy technology. For just $99.95
we can supply plans for a build it yourself tire degausser. Build it
simply out of easily available materials, degausss your tires and sleep
   easy.
No only that think but think of the business opportunities you will have
as the only tire degausser in your town!

Act now  - its your future...

Heres a an example of a tire degausser built from the plans.

HMMM I wonder if I could mount pick up coils in the wheel wells and extract some energy.

Whoa!

A whole 2.0 micro Teslas!!   Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

That explains fully why I drive faster when I am wearing steel toed shoes!!

Wonder if they were detecting the residual magnetism from the speakers in the doors??  Roll Eyes

gee I wonder are 14 inch wheels are better than 17 inch wheels? I'll have to do the math. Could this be the reason there are so many idiots on the road?
Does it matter if you are driving N-S or E-W???
Can it be taxed or deficit spent?

Guess I need to worry about the field radiated by my subwoofers too?

How about the 9Hz. or so resonant frequency of that tonearm on my turntable, might it be causing excess micro tesla radiation from my subs??

Time to build a phase locked micro tesla field inversion device to cancel those pesky micro tesla fields in my car...

Or should I don my mu-metal cap again??

I'd say that it's time to pop open a brewski and contemplate the subharmonic vibrations of the liquid leaving the container.  Wink

And speaking of low-band signals...Don, yours were good into here at about my bedtime Saturday night.  I was listening briefly on my Yaesu VR-500, capacitively(!) coupled into a wall-wart and thence into the house wiring, for an antenna.  You were discussing pulling a capacitor from across a mod transformer, and having said modulator go into self-oscillation.
