Title: Anyone remember this Clegg? Post by: WA1LGQ on August 01, 2024, 09:08:40 PM This Clegg 250 is now up and running at the museum station W1VCM in Windsor, CT. It might be the only working Clegg 250 in the world. Only 5 were known to be made, this one is serial number 4. It is 6M AM and CW rated at 180 Watts output on AM with a 4Cx250 x 2 811A modulator. It easily does the 180 watts. Currently it is paired with a Collins 75A4 with a Parks converter. It was donated to the museum by Gary W1PG.

Title: Re: Anyone remember this Clegg? Post by: WA1LGQ on August 02, 2024, 10:41:33 AM Thanks Bill, I was hoping you would show up on 50.4 for the net. I hope someone else will operate the 250 next week! It would be cool to have the Lisa and Tina show on the net with it.

Thanks for posting the picture; I remember you showing me the rig a while back at the Museum, but I'd forgotten exactly what it looked like. Looking around on the web, most of the pictures I find are of the Clegg 62-T10, which looks very much like a different rig altogether. Given the very small production run, your 250 would seem to have been the prototype for the 62-T10.
Interesting that Clegg rated the 250 at 180 watts out—roughly 250 watts DC in, hence the name, I assume—while they rate my Zeus at 185 watts DC in for 120-130 watts out. Plate voltage is probably higher on the 250—the Zeus runs around ~900v on the plate. Both the final PA (4X150 as originally equipped) and the 811's in the Zeus modulator are run very conservatively. Did Clegg ship the 250 with a 4CX250 in the final, or the 4X150 as in the Zeus? Thanks Bill, I was hoping you would show up on 50.4 for the net. I hope someone else will operate the 250 next week! It would be cool to have Lisa and Tina show on the net with it. LB Title: Re: Anyone remember this Clegg? Post by: Pete, WA2CWA on August 02, 2024, 03:13:41 PM How the Clegg Company came to be:
https://www.qsl.net/w8loy/genesis.htm I seem to remember when I visited Ed's factory location in Mt. Tabor, NJ, a 62T10 and a Crystal Plexer were sitting adjacent to his workshop table in one corner of the factory. By then, the Zeus transmitter, Interceptor receiver, and the 99'er were in full production. I don't remember much specifically about them as I was a relatively new teenage ham and any equipment with knobs, meters, and stuff excited me. ;D Over the years, I've collected a number of Clegg equipment items including: 99'er, 66'er, 22'er(AM), 22'er MKII (AM/VFO), Thor, Venus, SS Booster(Venus), Apollo, (2)Zeus, Interceptor, Interceptor B, (2)AllBanders(tube), AllBander(solid-state) Ed and I reconnected back in late 90's via e-mail and phone to just shoot the breeze. All of the websites that I have found so far that reference the 62T10 don't have a correct photo. The photos are actually of the 209 Crystalplexer! And that is part of the Clegg 250. Here is a photo of the 62T10, we have 2 of them. This one was working last time I tried it, but it needs work. Sorry about the crappy photo.
Title: Re: Anyone remember this Clegg? Post by: KD1SH on August 03, 2024, 10:45:03 AM Good catch, Larry. I feel sort of foolish now; after seeing the picture of your CrystalPlexer, and then the pictures on the web of what they mistakenly call the 62T10, their mistake is obvious.

Post by: WA1LGQ on August 28, 2024, 11:15:35 AM A few of the knobs are not quite correct, though they are Clegg knobs, just not quite right. We have since replaced a couple with the correct markings and close appearance by use of a 3D printer. AMfone - Dedicated to Amplitude Modulation on the Amateur Radio Bands
