Title: National NC-183D matching paint
Post by: WD4LUR on March 17, 2024, 06:39:29 PM

Does anyone know of a place that sells paint to match a National NC-183D?

Thanks,
Dan

Take the cabinet to a paint body shop or a paint store and they can analyze the color and probably come close to the actual color. Green, blue, red, and purple are not good choices.

Yeah, I don't know why anyone would paint a NC-183D the colors you mentioned.

Going to the paint store to match it is definitely an option. I was hoping some outfit was selling matching paint in spray cans like they do for Heathkit and Collins. It would make things much easier. Several years ago, I painted S-line cabinets with the paint from Surplus Sales. It looked like new when finished.

Seymour cast-iron gray appears to be a very close match.

John,

I looked at the forum in the link you sent. That guy did a great job re-painting that front panel on his NC-183D and the color does match pretty good!

Thanks,
Dan

It's a REALLY tough color to match, and I thought that guy's work was astounding.  I've used a Duplicolor gray 1990s GM-something, and it looked good but wasn't a great match.

Check around for a Sherman Williams paint store.  Some of the larger will have facilities to fill spray cans, but you will have a minimum purchase of, maybe, a quart.

They have been the most accurate matching color for me.  Once upon a time Duplicolor made a Truck/SUV paint that was a close match, number 173 I think, but they changed their numbering system years back and I have never seen it in the intervening years.
