Very sad to see the original contributions ignored:  http://www.pantagraph.com/news/state-and-regional/illinois/led-inventor-feels-work-bypassed-by-nobel/article_04fedd61-a8dc-51c5-bf11-0aa8256c3a8d.html

Hi Rodger,

It sure seems like what they did was and extension of what Nick Holonyak Jr.'s and his colleagues invented.

Unfortunately this happens a lot in the patent world. While in industry obtaining patents, at times I was politically bullied in an attempt to add people to the patent that really did not have any contributing factors to the basic idea, but when the reverse was true I made sure any contributions were included.

Joe,

You did what you did because you are a class act!  Most people aren't.

I will certainly never be in Nobel prize contention but if I won one that ignored the seminal foundations for my research it would definitely take the shine off the award for me.

Another footnote is although the U of I is still a world class university the lousy level of support for higher education and basic research today probably means they won't soon be recreating the glory days of the past.  There have been some incredibly important research and findings over the years that were born in Urbana/Champaign.

Who gets Nobel prizes these days is very politically motivated.  I heard a long report about this particular award, and unrelated (to the science) topics such as so-called "global warming" and the like were prominent in the discussion.

It's not the old standard Nobel prize any more, that's fore sure!
