Title: ON4UN on 10meters.
Post by: W1RKW on October 23, 2011, 11:21:14 AM
Admins: I meant to put this in the 10m category.  Please move it.

He's working a huge pile up.  Coming into CT loud and strong at 11AM.  10m is hot today.

Awesome!  I have his book.  Is he on AM?

He was on last Sunday too. I just got a QSL card from him for a Q we had on 40 meters about a year ago.

I've been listening above 29 MHz for a couple of hours or more. Heard other stations, but not John D.

I actually made a couple of contacts on 10 meter AM yesterday. It was exhilarating! :-)

I neglected to mention he was on 28.475 USB.

He had an excellent signal last weekend, was listening to him from Steve's place. Very good audio for SSB, he has a fairly deep voice but very easy to understand.

I worked him on 20 M last Spring.  He was splattering up and down the band with his K3 and linear.
I don't think anybody told him about the splattering.  Nothing but compliments about his signal.
Guess it matters who you are.

I've heard some other K3s splatter. QST measured the transmit 3rd-order IMD at -29 dB. That's pretty horrible considering some rigs made 25-30 years ago were at -35 or better.

Thats worse then an FT101.  That explains alot thought.  There is a nearby operator with a K3 into a Damn  Ameritron 811H amp (probably mistuned) that takes out 100 KC blocks of the band.  He keeps talking about VIZWARS, what ever the heck that is.

VIZWARS

Ha! I hear that quite a bit on the bands lately.   ;D

'VIZWARS" are gremlin like creatures that predominately inhabit co-axial cables. Operators of home brew ladder line, and to a lesser extent 'window' line, are rarely bothered by the VISWARS.

I've heard several folks mention this, but his signal on 10 was okay when I heard him. I tuned above and below listening to other stations. Maybe he cleaned things up.

Then again, when you take a bunch or pre-assembled boards and shove them into a box (or as Elecraft calls it, "Modular No-Soldering Kit"), anything could result. It's a far cry from something like a Heathkit that you actually built up from the component level, aligned, and proceeded to troubleshoot as needed. One step away from buying a Yaecomwood.

I guess if it is an American plastic radio, you could call it a "Rice-a-Roni box"
