Title: New look for a Viking Valiant II
Post by: xe1yzy on September 09, 2011, 12:41:38 PM
Well, Im about to finish another VV, I never like to much the "look" of the Valiant II, so I decided to try a new color... Why not a black wrinkle panel? (sorry for the collectors in this forum )

What do you like more? original (brown) knobs, or more buzzard black ones?

Have a nice weekend!

Pedro,
You aren't the first to paint a Valiant black. I did mine years ago. But mine is a little different, it is gloss black with 5 or 6 coats of automotive urethane clearcoat.

Pedro,
That black krinkle paint takes forever to reach full hardness. Let it set out in the sun for a few days and dry real good before you even consider clear coating it. The paint should be hard enough that you cannot sink a fingernail into it.

Jack,
Dee Almquist (W4PNT) used to do them. but the last time that I talked to hin, he said that he had had enough paint and was retiring from painting. His work was most excelent! !

The black looks good, but I think it wants to have the aluminum bezel around the main set of knobs... that would really set it off nicely... the contrast.

Absolutely beautiful, Pedro!  The lettering font fits the era - looks like the labeling on the 1962 Dodge:

Looks great! I like it alot.  Alot of these rigs are beat down and need a repaint.  Look for some black EF johnson knobs on ebay to replace the brown ones.  Good job!

Man, that black and bright looks excellent slab. Wow.

Jared, Pedro,
I dont know what the deal was with the wrinkle finish paint that E.F.Johnson used on Valiant 2s and a few other models, but it just fell right off of the cabinets. It was probably something to do with an incompatability with the cadmium plating underneath. all of the table top Junkston stuff had paint issues, but the wrinkled stuff was the worst!!
IIRC,  I stripped the front od my Valiant 2 with my thumbnail and maybe a popsickle stick.
It literally just fell off when you touched it.

the Clearcoat black is a trick from motorcycle painting. the clearcoat over top of the allready glossy black just adds depth to the shine, but it does look cool. I painted my souped up Invader 2000 the same color scheme. The Urethane clearcoat also makes it just about indestructable. I thought about it afterwards, I should have airbrushed some ghost flames onto it as well. Hindsight is always 20-20........................
