I want to know what happen to the shit I used to listen to: 1) Ultimate Spinach 2) Chocolate Watchband 3) Thirteenth Floor Elevators 4) Fever Tree 5) EARLY Pink Floyd (with Syd Barrett before he overdosed) 6) The Groundhogs 7) Atomic Rooster  The "Bubble Puppy" - Could there have been a better song than "Hot Smoke and Sassafras"? 9) The "Peanut Butter Conspiracy" 10) "Love" 11) "Move" - yes Virginia, there was a band before "ELO" 12) The "Rainy Daze" - Remember "That Acapulco Gold"? 13) "Talk Talk" 14) The "Shadows of Knight" I could go on and on. To me, the real heros were the Psychedelic and Punk Bands that were shooting stars, or burned out from too many months of staying "high", having wild sex, etc, etc (well, the Doors did make it). I still have all of the stuff I used to listen to, and keep it in record racks in my basement. The problem is I haven't been able to access it due to a plethora of 1930's and 40's 6' rack transmitters that have been blocking the stuff so I can't get to it. In the late 1970's I used to be a frequent guest on the "Mr. Monotone Show", a "punk" show broadcasted over WKDU from Drexel University in Philly. They had a pretty good coverage area considering their college station status (10W, I used to load the TX up to 100W+ when I was on). I used to play the obscure stuff nobody remembered or heard that much of. The listening audience absolutely loved it (bearing in mind the average listener at the time loved Iggy Pop - hi!). Yes, it's true that your "classic rock" artists were great. There was definitely a reason why people liked them and still do. I could never understand why your so called "garage bands" (ie: the "Nazz", Elizabeth, etc) never made it big. Perhaps they just didn't have the promotion, or where on obscure little labels like "International Artists" out of Austin Texas (Thirteenth Floor Elevators). To me, the obscure bands will always be tops, and when I (finally) move a few transmitters blocking their access, I'll be able to listen to them again. Anyone wanna come over for a few spins of the above groups? You need not bring a "bong" to enjoy them! |

I would replace Aerosmith & Hendrix with Credence Clearwater Alman Brothers, Bob Seger, Eric Clapton & Cream or any one of a dozen other GOOD groups. Never cared too much for Aerosmith or Hendrix. Just my opinion. |
