This is an FM dual bander, excuse the non AM reference  Cheesy

I have tx power now after replacing the finals now have good RF output
but  its got a button under the display (sql)
and if you press it, you can adj the sq with the right control knob.
Set to ZERO, theres no static unless you press the TXPWR
button near that, then you hear the noise floor and you can adjust sq
level to cancel the noise.

If I try to hit a repeater at that point, say from my HT - I hear it talk
back on the Yaesu. If I leave it sit there like that,
you wont hear any responses from the repeater anymore unless you repeat that
process with the txpwr button changing levels.

If I try to hit the repeater after I set the sq to say zero, its not making
it there and you loose
the noise floor as soon as you unkey. I am thinking thats the PL tone wrong
maybe but the
menu setting is called "TONE SQ" not PL/CTCSS...but it does have the typical
CTCSS frequency selections
you would see for pl.

Likewise, if you press the mike PTT quickly, the noise floor is gone
instantly, so its any time
you key it seems like you activate something like maybe tone sq?
Tone SQ is off in the settings so am puzzled.

Once you press the ptt fast, you are locked out of TX mode until you do
another fast press of the ptt.
Weird.

Not familiar with this model specifically, but the three Yaesu vhf radios I have all call the PL, etc., “tone sq”.

Check that you’ve got tone sq set to on and set to the repeater’s PL frequency.

My Yaesu also has tone squelch receive. Check to see ifn it is on or off. I never use mine on. I always squelch manually.

Ok interesting they have it refered to as squelch not specificly PL.
Must be a Yaesu thing.

Yeasu support said to check in the signaling menu for sql type set to "tone enc".
I had it set to OFF, but with it set that way, still no difference.

So it looks like the sq is working sorta normally after that setting was changed.
I have a noise floor, and when set to 1, it squelches it, and you can hear repeater rx
when it comes in.

Still had to activate the txpwr button to hear the noise floor on sq-0 setting.
Otherwise when you first power up, its like the sq is up max, or something is inhibiting rx.
Theres no batter backup for settings, it uses an SD card, and its indicating SD on the display
and it reads data fromit on power up. Maybe something in there is corrupt?
