I was cleaning this to deal with the slippage. When I reassembled
this it doesn’t seem to catch. The shaft is just rotating. I reset the backlash
gears per the instruction I found here. The shaft rotates if I turn
the gears inside so the gear on the shaft seems placed right on the
dial gear.

I’m seeing strange things on this radio. Could someone please
confirm all the parts are there and the order of assembly
of this is correct?  I’m thinking I have to really tighten
this nut to get everything correct. I attach a photo with
my order of assembly from 1 to 5. It’s possible someone did
a kludge repair but the Collins manual doesn’t break out this piece
by part

The Collins Collectors Association website has a Manuals section in it.

https://www.collinsradio.org/cca-collins-technical-archives/collins-radio-equipment-manuals/

Work your way down to the 51-S1 section then head to section 6. On page 43 there is a blowup of the gear train.

Hope it leads you somewhere!

Good luck.

Thanks. I did get that figured out. Of course, I now
have five other problems with this I’ll need to work
out. I documented everything on the Collins Radio
Collector Facebook page for anyone interested.
