Back in the 20's, potentiometers were scarce, so you adjusted the gain of a receiver by changing the value of the grid leak resistor. Resistors were cartridge type. MUTER released a Grid Leak Drip Pan that hung on the resistor.

Once the resistor was up to temperature, perhaps it could be basted!
