Brrrr- it's cold in the shack! Fire up the BIG RIG

WWW
« on: July 20, 2021, 12:25:13 PM »

Quite a good 'fester... unfortunately many folks took the word of the media "fake" news' weather
reports! They were essentially misleading. While there was a front that pizzed on the grounds until
early AM, the skies cleared out and sun arrived. There were two short showers, nothing significant
later near noon time. All in all, FB but still quite humid and warm.

Many AM'ers in attendance!

I peg it overall at about 57% of what would have been given a favorable weather forcast.
Not small turnout, but not as much as I expected.

My day went well, and while some really nice receivers, at really good prices did NOT move,
quite a few did. Sold off about 50% of what I came in with. My van was appreciative on the
run back up to smAlbunny! Less weight.

Bob, W2ENY squeezed into the corner to my side, and my friend Paul KD2IWC was on the
other side. Bob sold most of his BO-Tanker parts rigs. Did he sell the Apache? Nice clean Apache
with the chromium knobs! Paul sold a lot of odds-n-ends parts and tubes.

I'll post up more pix as I run them through photoshop...

And more of the story to come...

The highlight of the day for me was the fortuitous swap. One was planned between myself and Chris AJ1G, who came
in from Rhode Island (which isn't an island, strange, eh?) and myself, and then running into Brown, W1NZR
who had exactly (well, sort of) what I needed! Ended up with a 3 way swap!

More on this to come... with pix.

Glad to see these fests starting back up! The east coast fests are legendary I am told.

I have a trip to Boston planned for mid-September.  Trying to hit the same weekend of the Northeast HamXposition so I can put some faces with the calls I have interacted with here and on the air.

Sure do wish you could get a date a week or so EARLIER in October, Mike!!

Seems like NEARFEST always just misses the "Indian Summer" weather!!
Hope you put in a requisition for clear skies?

Ahhhh, yes - the venerable John Deere 110/112 steel seat. Been there, done that, replaced many-a-head gasket.

Great little tractors and faster than a friend's newer Ariens 18hp, but not 'cut out' for mowing 3 acres. The chaff from the former field grass would plug the cooling fins on the block causing much hotness.

Ended up selling it to a young guy from GA who (ready for this?) was a design engineer for JD designing new lawn tractors. He was most happy.

Off topic, I know, but Bear started it!  Grin

Mo' pix from Zuzzicks!

And Todd, dunno why you had trouble, but all you had to do is to wipe the screen that is over the flywheel side
of the engine - that is the intake that blows air across the head... whatever... I'm refurbishing a 212 and a 112
right now. The second Variator drive belt should be here today (royal PIA to install). Painting the pan on the 212,
and then it should be set for service! 48" mowah deck! Freshly refurb'd spindles, fresh paint... etc.

Mo Zuzzicks pix yet to come...

Yep, again - been there, done that. Actually carried a car snow brush next to the seat so I could brush it on the go. Didn't help. In defense of the 112, we had nearly 3 acres of 'lawn' which was actually field grass the prev. owners had kept cut. Once it got a bit of length or height to it, chaff became the problem. And it found its way into the cooling fins under the heat shield no matter how often I cleaned the screen.

Also managed to spit a gear through the case of the transaxle I'd completely rebuilt. Was a cold day, had to move things around in the garage. Apparently the gear oil had turned to the consistency of tar as a result of the cold temps and *BANG* - it spat out a small gear.

Finally replaced it with a '51 Farmall Super A with a 48" deck and life was good. Upgraded the deck to a 5ft Woods L59, even better. Mowing time dropped from several days to 1.5-2 hours.

They're great little tractors in the proper application. Trivia: the popular AMC show Madmen featured the new '65 110 in an episode. Someone drives it around inside the offices at an office party and it doesn't end well.
