I bought a Hammarlund HX-50  transmitter off of Epay and looks like it needs a power supply transformer.

Previous owner appears to have wired in at least three transformers to get what he needed to make the thing work.  Haven't plugged it in yet.  Looks like previous owner glued a big fat transformer on top of another and of course glue let go during shipment.  transformer flapping along on its leads.  I bought the rig off of 'dead peoples things' so I'm a little reluctant to pass judgement on the previous owner who is probably SK.  God bless his soul.

So point is I'll eventually put a new transformer in it.  Is Peter Dahl a good source for transformers?  Hammond?  Looks like price tag is probably going to be as much as the rig cost.  OUCH!  See below.

I don't want to even think of the time I'll have into this baby when all is said and done, but  it's in my charge now and I'll do what I have to to make it right with SK who took care of it before me.

If the existing transformer makes the thing work, why not just get creative in mounting them more securely. Or look around for a junker 50/50A with a good transformer. Spending $200+ additional seems like pissing your money away. There was nothing special or unique about this rig to consider it an investment for the future.

Pete,

You're right.  If I can get to work ok with existing transformers so much the better.  I would rather own a $200 HX50 than a $400 one. I think I might be able to do some minor rearranging and get it all to bolt together.  I wound it up about 1/2way on a variac in the standby mode and it looks like this thing may actually fly.

regards,
Bob

Bob, scope out hamfests for old Heathkit HP20 power supplies.  The power tranny oughta run that thing FB (except you'll hafta solid state the power suckply rectumfriers).  You can usually score them for about 20 bucks if you're lucky.
