Can anyone give me info on how did they pad a Viking II in order to use a Amplifier? The VII output 400w to much for a pair of 500z's I need about a fourth of that power with thought compromising the modulation.

My Viking II has two 6146's in the output for 120 watts (max) AM carrier.  400 watts sounds more like another Johnson box.

Yes it does have 2x 6146 which translate to 350 to 400 peak which is about 300 peak watts more than this Henry 2k-4  can handle. I normally only put about 125 peak watts into it which is about 75 watts rms.

Do ever key an amplifier with your VII?

No I run it barefoot, check into some regional AM nets. Mullet Society, SAMRC, etc.  Have not been on in a while.

Not dirt cheap, but nice little attenuators, ready made. You can pad them a bit with appropriate resistors to fine tune them, and stick them on a heat sink as needed.

Johnson made several Attenuators for use with their transmitters and amplifiers.

Here's an attenuator circuits from the Johnson Thunderbolt manual for use with the Viking II.
I'm sure it would probably work with other amplifiers.
