There's lots of vacuum variable capacitors on eBay these days.  If you can afford them, they are a great alternative to bread slicers.  It's a great time to build a big rig!   These and a mod xfmr are the heart of a plate modulated AM rig.

Use an "AM Courtesy Filter" to limit transmit audio bandwidth  +-4.5 KHz, +-6.0 KHz or +-8.0 KHz when needed.  Easily done in DSP.
